carbonic anhydrase inhibitor

carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, a substance that decreases the rate of carbonic acid and H+ production in the kidney, thereby increasing the excretion of solutes and the rate of urinary output. An example of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor is acetazolamide. Some carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are used as diuretics, others in the treatment of glaucoma.
