capsule endoscopy, an orally administered, disposable capsule containing video chips and a transmitter that moves passively through the gastrointestinal tract via peristalsis, recording images in the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, and colon. The images are examined for pathology, and the capsule is expelled with feces. Preparation for the procedure is similar to that required for a colonoscopy.
