capreomycin /kap′rē·ōmī″sin/ , an antibiotic and antitubercular agent. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of pulmonary infections caused by capreomycin-susceptible strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis when the primary agents are ineffective or cannot be used. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known sensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. It must be used with caution in patients with preexisting renal or auditory impairment. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the most serious adverse reactions are nephrotoxicity, hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, leukocytosis, leukopenia, urticaria, and skin rash.
