calcifediol /kal′sifē″dē·ol/ , a major transport form of vitamin D. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of metabolic bone disease associated with chronic renal failure. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypercalcemia, vitamin D toxicity, malabsorption syndrome, decreased renal function, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the most serious adverse effects are renal toxicity and those reactions associated with hypercalcemia, such as soft tissue calcification and GI and central nervous system disturbances.
