broad beta disease

broad beta disease, type III familial hyperlipoproteinemia in which a lipoprotein, high in cholesterol and triglycerides, accumulates in the blood. The condition, which affects males in their twenties and females in their thirties and forties, is characterized by yellowish nodules (xanthomas) on the elbows and knees, peripheral vascular disease, and elevated serum cholesterol levels. Persons with this disease are at risk of development of early coronary disease. Therapy includes dietary measures to reduce weight and levels of serum lipids. Also called dysbetalipoproteinemia, hyperlipidemia type III. See also hyperlipidemia, hyperlipoproteinemia.
