bone marrow transplantation, the transplantation of bone marrow from a healthy donor to stimulate production of normal blood cells. The marrow may be autologous (from a previously harvested and stored self-donation) or allogeneic (from a living related donor or a living unrelated donor). The bone marrow is removed from the donor by aspiration and infused intravenously into the recipient. Used to treat malignancies, such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and selected solid tumors; and nonmalignant conditions, such as aplastic anemia, immunological deficiencies, and inborn errors of metabolism. Transplantation is usually preceded by chemotherapy and total body radiation of the recipient.
