berylliosis

berylliosis /bəril′ē·ō″sis/ , poisoning that results from the inhalation of dusts or vapors containing beryllium or beryllium compounds. The substance also may enter the body through or under the skin. Also called chronic beryllium disease (CBD). See also inorganic dust. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: Characterized by granulomas throughout the body and by diffuse pulmonary fibrosis, resulting in a dry cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Symptoms may be treated with corticosteroids or methotrexate. In severe cases, lung transplantation may be considered. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: Symptoms may not appear for several years after exposure. A team approach including public and occupational health professionals, as well as pulmonary specialists should be employed.
