Berger’s disease [Jean Berger, 20th century French nephrologist] , a disorder characterized by the deposition of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the kidneys. Also called mesangial IgA nephropathy. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: The onset of disease is usually in childhood or early adulthood, and males are affected twice as often as females. Recurrent episodes of macroscopic hematuria and proteinuria are present when renal function is impaired. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels can slow the progression of the disease. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: The condition may or may not progress to renal failure over a period of many years. A spontaneous remission occurs in some cases.
