benign neoplasm [L, benignare + Gk, neos, new, plasma, formation] , a localized tumor that has a fibrous capsule, limited potential for growth, a regular shape, and cells that are well differentiated. A benign neoplasm does not invade surrounding tissue or metastasize to distant sites. Also called benign tumor. Compare malignant neoplasm. Kinds include adenoma, fibroma, hemangioma, lipoma.
