auranofin /ôr′ənof″in/ , an oral gold disease-modifying antirheumatoid drug. ▪ INDICATIONS: It can be prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, but is generally not first-line therapy. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Auranofin is contraindicated for patients who have disorders that are caused by or aggravated by medicines containing gold or who have impaired kidney function. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the most severe adverse effects are diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, pruritus, stomatitis, anemia, leukopenia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, proteinemia, hematuria, and elevated liver enzyme levels.
