Asperger’s syndrome /äs′pər·gərz/ [Hans Asperger, Austrian psychiatrist, 20th century] , a developmental disorder characterized by severe impairment of social interactions and impairment in language and communication skills. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: An obsessive interest in an object or topic is a characteristic of the disorder. Repetitive routines or rituals are also common, along with unusual patterns in speech and language. Uncoordinated movements are frequently observed. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Early treatment is important. It should be provided by a coordinated team attentive to the symptoms experienced by the patient and the support needed by the family. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: A predictable schedule that engages attention in structured activities will assist in coping with Asperger’s syndrome.
