alcoholic hallucinosis

alcoholic hallucinosis, a form of alcoholic psychosis characterized primarily by auditory hallucinations occurring in a clear sensorium, abject fear, and delusions of persecution. The condition develops in acute alcoholism as withdrawal symptoms shortly after prolonged and heavy alcohol intake is stopped or reduced, usually within 48 hours. Constitutes a medical emergency.
