AIDS cholangiopathy

AIDS cholangiopathy, biliary duct disease that is a complication of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The most common effect is primary sclerosing cholangitis; some patients also have dysfunction of the sphincter of Oddi. This syndrome is most commonly caused by Cryptosporidium parvum, but it can also be caused by Microsporidium, cytomegalovirus, and Cyclospora cayetanensis. Its occurrence has been reduced by the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy.
