Administration on Aging (AOA), the principal U.S. agency designated to carry out the provisions of the Older Americans Act of 1965. The AOA advises the U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and other federal departments and agencies on the characteristics and needs of older people and develops programs designed to promote their welfare. The federal government gives funds to states to create and maintain supportive services for older adults. The money is for programs that lead to the well-being of older adults and to their ability to live independently in their homes and communities. Some of these programs offer nutrition, transportation, guidance on elder rights, caregiving support, adult day care, and more. The administration has been in operation for over 35 years.
