corneal abrasion

corneal abrasion /kôr″nē·əl/ [L, corneus, horny, abrasio, scraping] , the rubbing off of the outer layers of the cornea. A scratch or a small amount of dirt or sand trapped under the eyelid can cause a corneal abrasion.
