contra bevel [L, contra, against; OFr, baif, open mouth] , 1. the angle between a dental cutting blade and the base of the periodontal pocket when the blade is held so that it separates the sulcular epithelium from the external epithelium of the gingiva. Also called reverse bevel. 2. an external bevel of a tooth preparation extending onto a buccal or lingual cusp from an intracoronal restoration.
