adenoassociated virus (AAV)

adenoassociated virus (AAV), a defective virus belonging to a group of DNA viruses of the Parvoviridae family that can reproduce only in the presence of adenoviruses. It is not yet known what role, if any, these organisms have in causing disease. No specific antiviral is available. When not replicating, it is integrated into the host genome and has been proposed as a vector for gene transfer.
