clonal selection theory

clonal selection theory, (in immunology) a scientific model of the function of cells of the immune system in response to an antigen. Immunity to an antigen is the result of immunological memory related to the cloning of two types of lymphocytes. The first clone acts immediately to combat infection, and the second, longer-lasting clone remains in the immune system, resulting in immunity to that antigen.
