claustrum

claustrum /klôs″trəm/ pl. claustra [L, a closing] , 1. a barrier, as a membrane that partially closes an aperture. 2. a thin sheet of gray matter, composed chiefly of spindle cells, situated lateral to the external capsule of the brain and separating the internal capsule from white matter of the insula. Also called claustrum of insula.
