Ciliata /sil′ē·ā″tə/ , a class of protozoa of the subphylum Ciliophora, characterized by cilia throughout the life cycle. The class includes the subclasses Euciliata and Protociliata. The only significant ciliate affecting humans is the intestinal parasite Balantidium coli, which causes dysentery.
