acute primary myocarditis, 1. an inflammation of the heart muscle, most commonly caused by a bacterial infection initiated locally or carried through the bloodstream. 2. a severe inflammation of the heart muscle associated with degeneration of the muscle fibers and release of leukocytes into the interstitial tissues.
