central line

central line, (Informal) IV tubing inserted for continuous access to a central vein, either the jugular or subclavian, for administering fluids and medicines and for obtaining diagnostic information. Keeping the central line in place ensures accessibility to the venous system in case the peripheral veins collapse. It may also be used for kidney dialysis and long-term drug therapy. See also central venous catheter.
