acute air trapping, a condition of bronchiolar obstruction that results in early airway closure and trapping of air distal to the affected bronchiole. Air trapping can occur in persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma. Persons prone to episodes of acute air trapping learn to control expirations through pursed-lip breathing.
