activated charcoal, a general-purpose emergency antidote and a powerful pharmaceutic adsorbent. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of acute poisoning and the control of flatulence. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: There are no known contraindications, but activated charcoal is ineffective in poisoning caused by a strong acid or an alkali, cyanide, organic solvents, ethanol, methanol, iron, and lithium. It should not be administered by mouth to unconscious persons. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: There are no known adverse effects.
