camphor /kam″fər/ [L, camphora] , a colorless or white crystalline substance with a penetrating odor and pungent taste, occurring naturally in certain plants, especially Cinnamomum camphora. It is present in some over-the-counter topical pain relievers, as well as in ointments applied to the chest. Its use is common in ayurveda rituals. Also called camphor, gum camphor.
