buprenorphine /bu″prĕ-nor′fēn/ , a synthetic opioid agonist-antagonist derived from thebaine, used in the form of the hydrochloride salt as an analgesic for moderate to severe pain and as an anesthesia adjunct. Administered sublingually or by intramuscular or IV injection. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is administered parenterally for the relief of moderate to severe pain and is used in tablet form to treat opioid dependence. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: This Schedule V controlled substance is contraindicated for patients who may be opioid dependent. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the reported adverse effects are respiratory depression, sedation, nausea, dizziness, vertigo, headache, vomiting, miosis, diaphoresis, and hypotension.
