bombesin /bom′bə·sin/ , a neurohormone and pressor substance found in small amounts in brain and intestinal tissue under normal conditions and in increased amounts in certain pulmonary and thyroid tumors. It is a potent mitogen (stimulator of mitosis) and its effects on gastrin and other hormones are attributed to increased cell numbers.
