battered woman syndrome (BWS), a subcategory of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in which a woman who has experienced physical and emotional abuse continues to reexperience the abuse after it ceases; avoids activities; is in a state of hyperarousal and/or hypervigilance; has difficulty with interpersonal relationships, sexuality, and intimacy issues; and has a distorted body image.
