Basedow’s goiter

Basedow’s goiter /bä″sədōz/ [Karl A. von Basedow, German physician, 1799–1854] , a name for a colloid goiter. A colloid goiter occurs when there is insufficient iodine to produce adequate levels of thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland compensates by enlarging, causing an increase in hormone production. Treatment for the goiter includes the administration of iodine, which can result in hyperthyroidism with increased basal metabolic rate, insomnia, and fine motor tremor.
