zika virus disease

zika virus disease, a flu-like infection caused by the Zika virus. Its primary vector is the mosquito (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus), although sexual transmission is suspected. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: The most common symptoms include a rash that begins on the face and usually lasts a week or more. Other symptoms include conjunctivitis, mild fever, chills, and joint and muscle aches. Fatigue, malaise, abdominal pain, and vomiting may also be present. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: The disease is usually self-limiting, and there is no specific treatment. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: Women who are pregnant and suspect infection should consult with their health care provider to receive serologic testing for the virus and an evaluation for microcephaly, which is associated with the viral infection. A referral to experts in maternal-child health and infectious disease management is recommended.
