yersiniosis /yər·sin′·ē·ō′sis/ , infection with bacteria of the genus Yersinia, especially Y. enterocolitica. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: Symptoms of infection include acute gastroenteritis and mesenteric adenitis in children and arthritis, septicemia, and erythema nodosum in adults. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Uncomplicated cases of diarrhea due to Y. enterocolitica usually resolve on their own without antibiotic treatment. However, in more severe or complicated infections, antibiotics are required. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: Careful hand washing and caution in the preparation and storage of food play a major role in the prevention of the disease.
