xenograft /zen′əgraft′/ [Gk, xenos + graphion, stylus] , tissue from another species used as a temporary graft in certain cases, as in treating a severely burned patient when sufficient tissue from the patient or from a tissue bank is not available. It is quickly rejected but provides a cover for the burn for the first few days, reducing fluid loss from the open wound. Also called heterograft. Compare allograft, autograft, isograft. See also graft.
