volume imaging, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques in which MR signals are gathered at once from the whole object volume to be imaged. Many sequential plane imaging techniques can be categorized as volume imaging, at least in principle. Advantages include potential improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio as a result of the inclusion of signals from the whole volume. Disadvantages include a bigger computational task for image reconstruction and longer image acquisition times, although the entire volume can be imaged from one set of data.
