vitronectin /vit″ro-nek′tin/ , a multifunctional adhesive glycoprotein found in serum and various tissues. Its functions include regulation of the coagulation, fibrinolytic, and complement cascades, and it plays a role in hemostasis, wound healing, tissue remodeling, and cancer. It mediates the inflammatory and repair reactions at sites of tissue injury and promotes adhesion, spreading, and migration of cells. It has been shown to be identical to S protein, which was identified as an inhibitor of complement activation, binding the membrane attack complex and preventing its insertion into the membrane.
