vertical strabismus [L, vertex + Gk, strabismos, squint] , a deviation of one eye in a vertical direction from a point of fixation. A common cause is overaction by the inferior oblique muscles or a weakness of the superior oblique muscle, resulting in a quick vertical movement of the eyeball on adduction. Also called upward-and-downward squint, vertical squint.
