ventriculofallopian tube shunt /-fəlō″pē·ən/ , a surgical procedure with limited effectiveness for diverting cerebrospinal fluid into the peritoneal cavity. A polyethylene tube is passed from the lateral ventricle or from the spinal subarachnoid space into a ligated fallopian tube and finally into the peritoneal cavity, where the shunted cerebrospinal fluid is absorbed. This procedure is used to correct both the obstructive and the communicating types of hydrocephalus. Also called spinofallopian tube shunt.
