ball-and-socket joint

ball-and-socket joint, a synovial or multiaxial joint in which the globular (ball-shaped) head of an articulating bone is received into a cuplike cavity, allowing the distal bone to move around an indefinite number of axes with a common center, such as in hip and shoulder joints. Also called enarthrosis, spheroidea. Compare condyloid joint, pivot joint, saddle joint. See also joint.
