umbilicus /umbilī″kəs, umbil″ikəs/ [L, navel] , the point on the abdomen at which the umbilical cord joined the fetal abdomen. In most adults it is marked by a depression; in some, it is marked by a small protrusion of skin. It interrupts the linea alba about halfway between the infrasternal notch and the pubic symphysis. It is located at the level of the interspace of the third and the fourth lumbar vertebrae. Also called belly button, navel.umbilical, adj.
