The back is divided by a middle furrow that lies over the tips of the spinous processes of the vertebrae. The skeletal portion of the back includes the thoracic and the lumbar vertebrae and both scapulae. The nerves that innervate the various muscles of the back arise from the segmental spinal nerves.
