tourniquet infusion method

tourniquet infusion method, a technique of intraarterial regional chemotherapy used in the treatment of osteogenic sarcoma. The technique uses one or two external tourniquets, depending on the location of the tumor, that slow or interrupt the blood flow to a limb temporarily while an anticancer drug, such as adriamycin, is infused into the area. The method increases the concentration of an antineoplastic drug by as much as 100 times compared with an alternative technique of injecting the drug into the circulation without application of a tourniquet, which results in rapid dilution of the drug by the normal blood volume.
