Ayers, A. Jean [American occupational therapist and developmental psychologist, 1920–1989] , developed the original theory and intervention techniques used in sensory integration dysfunction. She focused on children, particularly those with autism spectrum disorders or attention deficit–hyperactivity disorders. Ayers Sensory Integration theory (ASI) is utilized in occupational therapy and is the foundation of sensory integration therapy. She provided occupational therapy practitioners specific intervention strategies to remediate the underlying sensory issues that affect functional performance. See also sensory integrative therapy.
