toremifene, an antineoplastic. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is used to treat advanced breast carcinoma that is not responsive to other therapy in estrogen-receptor–positive patients (usually postmenopausal). ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known hypersensitivity to this drug and pregnancy prohibit its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Life-threatening effects are thrombocytopenia and leukopenia. Other adverse effects include altered taste (anorexia), vaginal bleeding, pruritus vulvae, rash, alopecia, chest pain, depression, hypercalcemia, ocular lesions, retinopathy, corneal opacity, and blurred vision (high doses). Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, headache, and light-headedness.
