ticarcillin /tik′ärsil″in/ , an extended-spectrum penicillin antibiotic. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of bacterial septicemia, as well as skin, soft tissue, and respiratory infections caused by both gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, including some strains of Pseudomonas. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: A history of allergic reaction to any of the penicillins prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the most serious adverse effects are anaphylactic reactions, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, neutropenia, eosinophilia, vein irritation, and phlebitis.
