sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim /trīmeth″əprim/ , a fixed-combination antibacterial. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of urinary tract infections, otitis media, chronic bronchitis, traveler’s diarrhea, and other infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria and for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonitis prophylaxis. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: It is used with caution in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function, possible folate deficiency, or known hypersensitivity either to drug or to sulfonamides. It is not recommended for use in infants less than 2 months of age or in the third trimester of pregnancy. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are crystalluria and rashes, fever, and other allergic reactions.
