sulfamethoxazole /sul′fəmethok″səzōl/ , a sulfonamide antibacterial. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of otitis media, prostatitis, epididymitis, bronchitis, and certain urinary tract infections. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: It is not given during the last trimester of pregnancy, during lactation, or to children less than 2 months of age. Known hypersensitivity to this drug or to other sulfonamides prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are crystalluria and rash, fever, and other allergic reactions.
