stress test

stress test, a test that measures the function of a system of the body when subjected to carefully controlled amounts of physiological stress, usually exercise but sometimes specific drugs. The data produced allow the examiner to evaluate the condition of the system being tested. Cardiopulmonary function, respiratory function, and intrauterine fetal placental function are tested with stress tests. Also called thallium stress test, treadmill stress test.
