stomatitis /stō′mətī″tis/ [Gk, stoma + itis, inflammation] , any inflammatory condition of the mouth. It may result from infection by bacteria, viruses, or fungi; from exposure to certain chemicals or drugs; from vitamin deficiency; or from a systemic inflammatory disease. Kinds include aphthous stomatitis, pseudomembranous stomatitis, thrush, Vincent’s angina, Vincent’s infection. See also candidiasis.
