silo filler’s disease

silo filler’s disease /sī″lō/ [Fr, ensilotage, ensilage; AS, fyllan, to fill] , a rare acute respiratory condition seen in agricultural workers who have inhaled nitrogen oxide as they work with fermented fodder in closed, poorly ventilated areas such as silos. Characteristically, symptoms of respiratory distress and pulmonary edema occur several hours after exposure. Loss of consciousness may occur. Observation in the hospital and respiratory assistance often are required. The condition is rarely fatal.
