sickle cell dactylitis [AS, sicol + L, cella, storeroom; Gk, daktylos, finger, itis, inflammation] , a painful inflammation of one or more fingers caused by an attack of sickle cell anemia. The severe pain affects the bones of the hands, the feet, or both. It is often the first symptom of sickle cell disease in babies.
