self-breast examination (SBE)

self-breast examination (SBE), a procedure in which a woman examines her breasts and their accessory structures for evidence of change that could indicate a malignant process. The SBE should be performed when the breasts are not swollen or tender. Women may choose not to do SBE or to do SBE occasionally. Women who choose not to do SBE should still be familiar with the usual appearance and feel of their breasts and report any changes immediately to their primary care provider. Also called breast self-examination. See also breast examination.
